{"id":253,"date":"2026-01-06T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kathrynwhite.coach\/?p=253"},"modified":"2025-12-17T18:36:58","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T18:36:58","slug":"why-i-ask-my-clients-to-set-intentions-not-goals-during-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kathrynwhite.coach\/?p=253","title":{"rendered":"Why I Ask My Clients to Set Intentions, Not Goals, During Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When you\u2019re living with a cancer diagnosis, you\u2019re surrounded by goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Treatment goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lab number goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBe positive\u201d goals everyone around you seems to expect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But in real life, the life you\u2019re actually living in your body right now, those kinds of goals can feel heavy, punishing, or even impossible. That\u2019s why I invite my clients to do something very different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Set&nbsp;<strong>intentions<\/strong>&nbsp;instead of goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s the Difference Between Goals and Intentions?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goals<\/strong>&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Future-focused outcomes ex. \u201cI will walk 30 minutes every day.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specific, measurable targets ex. \u201cI will lose 10 pounds.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often tied to achievement or performance ex. \u201cI will never feel anxious about scans again.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Intentions<\/strong>&nbsp;are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Present-focused ways of being ex. \u201cI intend to treat my body with kindness today.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guiding principles or attitudes ex. \u201cI intend to meet myself with honesty and compassion, no matter how I feel.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grounded in your values and what you can control right now ex. \u201cI intend to bring curiosity, not judgment, to my fear around scans.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both can have a place in life. But during cancer, they land very differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Goals During Cancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Goals can sometimes be supportive when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are gentle, flexible, and aligned with your reality such as, \u201cI will drink one extra glass of water today.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are about behaviours you can control, not outcomes you can\u2019t such as, \u201cI will write down one thing that brought me a moment of ease tonight.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They help you feel a sense of structure and agency such as, \u201cI will ask one question at my next appointment.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When used this way, goals can create a sense of direction without becoming a burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Flipside of Goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of my clients come to me burnt out from goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how goals can backfire:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They can feel like tests you can fail.<\/strong> On days when fatigue, pain, or side effects knock you flat, a goal like \u201cwalk 30 minutes\u201d can turn into a harsh internal voice: \u201cYou failed again. You\u2019re not trying hard enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They can ignore the unpredictability of treatment.<\/strong><br>Cancer doesn\u2019t care about your carefully laid plans. You might wake up feeling okay and be flattened by noon. Strict goals rarely account for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They can attach your worth to your performance.<\/strong><br>\u201cIf I meet my goals, I\u2019m doing cancer \u2018right.\u2019 If I don\u2019t, I\u2019m failing.\u201d You are not a project. You are a person living through something enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They can reinforce toxic positivity.<\/strong><br>Goals like \u201cI will stay positive all the time\u201d can shame you for feeling afraid, angry, or sad, emotions that are completely normal and human responses to cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Power of Intentions During Cancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Intentions shift the focus from&nbsp;<em>What did I accomplish?<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>How am I choosing to show up with what\u2019s here?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intentions can help you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Honor your humanity.<\/strong> You\u2019re allowed to be tired, scared, hopeful, numb, grateful, resentful, all of it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adapt to each day as it really is.<\/strong> Instead of forcing yourself to meet a standard, you meet yourself where you are.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stay connected to what matters to you.<\/strong> Your values, like dignity, connection, honesty, and courage, can guide you even when outcomes are uncertain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soften perfectionism.<\/strong> Intentions are not pass\/fail. They\u2019re invitations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Intentions Can Go Wrong (and How to Avoid That)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even intentions can be twisted into subtle self-judgment if we\u2019re not careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Negative form of intentions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI intend to stop being so weak.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI intend to never cry about this again.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI intend to be grateful all the time.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are still performance rules wrapped in softer language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supportive intentions sound more like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI intend to speak to myself as I would to a dear friend.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI intend to let my feelings exist without deciding they\u2019re wrong.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI intend to notice one moment of safety or comfort today, if it appears.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference? One demands perfection. The other offers compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Comparing Goals and Intentions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example 1: Fatigue and Movement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Goal: \u201cI will exercise 5 days a week for 30 minutes.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intention: \u201cI intend to listen to my body and give it the movement, stillness, or rest it needs today.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On a low-energy day, the goal version might trigger shame. The intention version allows for \u201ctoday movement looks like two stretches in bed\u201d or \u201ctoday rest is the kindest choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example 2: Scans and Fear<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Goal: \u201cI will not freak out about my scan results.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intention: \u201cI intend to meet my scanxiety with curiosity and compassion.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal suggests that fear is failure. The intention acknowledges fear and invites a different way to relate to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example 3: Relationships and Support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Goal: \u201cI will never burden anyone with my feelings.\u201d or \u201cI will always be strong for my family.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intention: \u201cI intend to be honest about what I\u2019m feeling and ask for the support I need when I can.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal demands emotional perfection. The intention honors your needs and your humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Set Intentions When You\u2019re Living With Cancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a simple way to begin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pause and check in.<\/strong> Ask:&nbsp;<em>What is really here today: physically, emotionally, mentally?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Name what matters to you.<\/strong> Is it kindness? Truth? Connection? Dignity? Rest? Agency?<br>Choose one value that feels important today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turn it into an intention.<\/strong> Use language like:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI intend to\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">\u201cToday I choose to\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cMy priority today is to\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cToday, I intend to move through this day at the pace my body needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, &quot;Segoe UI&quot;, Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, sans-serif;\">\u201cI choose to allow myself to feel what I feel, without labeling it as good or bad.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cMy priority today is to ask one clear question at my appointment so I understand my care better.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Keep it small and gentle.<\/strong><br>If it sounds like a demand, shrink it. Ask:&nbsp;<em>Does this feel like support or pressure?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Revisit and revise.<\/strong><br>Intention-setting is not a contract; it\u2019s a living conversation with yourself. At midday, you might adjust: \u201cThis morning my intention was to get things done. Now my body is asking for rest. I intend to honour that.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When You\u2019re Too Tired to \u201cWork on Yourself\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some days, the idea of \u201cpersonal growth\u201d or \u201cmindset work\u201d is just too much. You do not need to be productive about your cancer experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On those days, an intention can be as simple as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI intend to do the bare minimum and call that enough.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI intend to let myself be held by others, by my bed, by the couch.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI intend to manage this day, nothing more.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That is not giving up. That is wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You Don\u2019t Have to Do This Alone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a cancer coach, I help people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Untangle harsh, goal-driven expectations that don\u2019t fit life with cancer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn to set compassionate, realistic intentions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build emotional tools for scanxiety, uncertainty, and fear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reconnect with who they are beyond their diagnosis, even in the middle of treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re tired of feeling like you\u2019re \u201cfailing\u201d at coping, healing, or staying positive, we can create a different way, one that honours your body, your limits, and your heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are not a project to fix.
