A new pain appears. Your doctor’s office calls. Nothing has been confirmed, but your mind has already decided the cancer is back or the treatment has stopped working.

You replay conversations, analyse every sensation, and try to prepare for every possible outcome. Meanwhile, the day in front of you slips quietly into the background.

That is one of the quieter things cancer can steal: today.

Fear turns possibility into prediction

“I have a scan next week” is something you know. “The results will be bad” is a prediction fear has created.

Your mind is not doing this because you are weak or negative. It remembers being blindsided and is trying to protect you. But imagining the worst does not prepare you, it makes you experience an outcome that has not happened.

That prediction can feel so convincing that your body responds as though it is already true. Your heart races. Your stomach tightens. You struggle to focus on anything else. Fear has taken a possibility and turned it into a present-day emergency.

Peace does not require certainty

As a Stage 4 colon cancer thriver of more than ten years, I used to believe I could worry my way into feeling prepared. I could not.

For a long time, I thought peace would arrive when I finally felt certain about the future. But cancer had already shown me that certainty was not something I could demand from life.

The shift came when I realized I did not need certainty to stay connected to myself. I could feel afraid, notice what was true today, and respond to the information I actually had. Fear could be present without being the only voice in the room.

Return to the day you are living

When fear pulls you into the future, pause and ask: “What do I actually know today?”

Then choose one supportive step. Call your medical team. Write down your questions. Ask for help. Step outside. Rest. Your next step does not have to fix the future; it only has to support you now.

This is not about ignoring symptoms or avoiding medical care. It is about responding wisely without letting fear write the diagnosis first.

Sometimes returning to today is as simple as feeling your feet on the floor, taking one slow breath, or placing a hand over your heart and reminding yourself: “I am here.” These small actions do not erase uncertainty. They help you come back to yourself inside it.

What becomes possible

The transformation is not becoming someone who never feels afraid. It is learning to recognize fear, return to what is true, and move forward with greater trust in yourself.

Over time, you may spend less energy trying to predict every outcome and more energy caring for the person who is living through this moment. You begin to make decisions from clarity instead of panic and find more room for the people, experiences, and ordinary moments that still matter to you.

Cancer may have interrupted your life. It does not get to claim every ordinary day that remains.

Watch the companion video

In Cancer Fear Was Stealing My Life – These 4 Questions Helped, I walk you through the complete process I use to keep uncertainty from taking over and choose one next right step when fear makes you feel stuck.

Related content

Read next: The Day I Stopped Fighting Cancer (and Started Living Again)

In my book, Living to Thrive: A Holistic Guide to Living with Cancer, I share more about rebuilding trust in yourself and creating a life that is not defined by cancer.

Ready for the Next Step?

Private 1:1 coaching is support that can help you move from feeling ruled by fear and overwhelmed by decisions to understanding what is happening, trusting yourself, and moving forward with greater calm and confidence. Schedule a free 30 minute consultation call today.

If making decisions feels overwhelming, download my free Next Right Step Guide.
