Did you describe the symptom clearly? Should you have pushed harder or would that make you look difficult?

When your cancer symptoms are dismissed, the uncertainty is painful. The reality is something else may happen too, you begin distrusting your own experience.

That loss of self-trust can change how quickly you report another symptom and how confidently you ask questions.

What Medical Gaslighting Can Feel Like

The term medical gaslighting is often used when a person’s symptoms or concerns are minimized, explained away or treated as less credible than they deserve. Not every incorrect diagnosis is intentional. Symptoms can have several causes, tests have limits and healthcare professionals sometimes work with incomplete information. Dismissal becomes harmful when there is no curiosity about what you are experiencing, when an assumption replaces assessment or when reassurance comes without a follow-up plan.

It may sound like:

“You’re too young for that.”

“It’s probably stress.”

“Your tests are normal.”

“Let’s wait and see.”

The problem is leaving without understanding why the explanation fits or what happens if the symptom continues.

The Part We Rarely Discuss

In October 2014, I went to the emergency room with abdominal pain so severe that I was screaming and almost passing out.

I was given morphine, told I was constipated and sent home with laxatives. I did not receive imaging or a meaningful investigation into what had caused such intense pain.

Months later, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer.

The severity of my experience did not seem to match the explanation. Yet I assumed the doctor understood something I did not. Maybe I had exaggerated. Maybe I had overreacted.

Medical dismissal can make you edit your experience before anyone else hears it. You soften the language or delay calling because you do not want to be a bother.

If you have done this, you did not fail. Most people were never taught what to say when reassurance does not match their experience.

Trusting Yourself Does Not Mean Distrusting Your Doctor

Your doctor brings medical knowledge. You bring knowledge of your body, your baseline and what has changed. Good care needs both.

Self-advocacy is not about preparing for conflict. It is about staying in the conversation. It cannot guarantee an outcome, but it can help you leave with a clearer next step.

Three Ways to Reclaim Your Voice

1. Describe the change not the diagnosis

Focus on what you know: when the symptom began, how it changed and what it prevents you from doing.

Try: “This is new for me, it is becoming more frequent and it is interfering with my daily life.”

2. Ask what happens next

If the recommendation is to wait, ask how long improvement should take, when to return and what happens if it does not improve.

“Wait and see” feels different when it includes a time frame and a plan.

3. Create a record you can return to

Bring a short symptom timeline and two questions. Take notes or bring someone you trust. Afterward, record the decision and your next step.

I have watched clients move from leaving appointments confused to arriving prepared and able to participate. They cannot control every answer, but they no longer disappear from the conversation.

Watch the Companion Video

In The Medical Gaslighting Trap | Why You’re Ignoring Your Own Symptoms, I share three warning signs and four questions to use to get the answers you need.

Your Voice Belongs in the Room

Being a good patient does not require silence.

You can respect medical expertise and ask for the reasoning. You can accept reassurance and request a follow-up plan. You can be kind and still be persistent.

If dismissal has affected your confidence, start with one promise: I will not abandon myself when something does not feel right.

That may mean writing down a symptom, asking one more question or seeking another opinion. You do not need a diagnosis before your concern deserves attention.

Cancer may have interrupted your life, but it does not have to make every decision for you.

Ready for the Next Step?

If you are ready to understand what you need and begin finding your way forward, I invite you to watch this video to learn more about cancer coaching.

If making decisions feels overwhelming, download my free Next Right Step Guide.
