Why Waiting Is Keeping You Stuck (And How to Start Living Again)

There was one conversation with my oncologist that changed the course of my life. At the time, it didn’t feel hopeful; it felt devastating.

She told me I needed to learn how to live with cancer.

Those words landed like a weight on my shoulders. To me, they sounded like the end of the future I had imagined. I thought she was asking me to lower my expectations, stop hoping, and accept a life I didn’t want. Looking back, I realize I completely misunderstood what she meant.

The Hidden Trap Cancer Creates

Cancer teaches us many things.

It teaches us patience and resilience but it also teaches us to wait. You wait for appointments, test results, treatment, and you wait to feel like yourself again. Without even realizing it, waiting can become a way of life. Eventually, you may find yourself saying:

“I’ll book that trip after my next scan.”

“I’ll relax once treatment is finished.”

“I’ll start living when I know everything is okay.”

The problem is that there is always another appointment, another test, another reason to postpone joy.

The Question That Changed Everything

One day I asked myself a question that completely shifted my perspective.

What if waiting for cancer to disappear was costing me the life I still had?

That question didn’t remove my fear and it didn’t remove my uncertainty. Instead it helped me realize something important.

Acceptance is not surrender. Acceptance is acknowledging today’s reality so you can decide how you want to live today. That single shift changed the direction of my life.

Living With Cancer Is Different Than Having Cancer

For years, I thought living with cancer meant settling for what my life had become. Instead, it became the very thing that gave me permission to begin again.

I started planning vacations. I became a cancer coach and wrote a book about my experience with cancer. I intentionally made memories with my family. I even started dreaming about the future without demanding guarantees.

Cancer was still part of my story, it just stopped writing every chapter.

A Question for You

Ask yourself this, what part of your life have you been waiting to get back?

Then ask yourself what is one small thing you could do this week that reminds you your life is still happening today?

It doesn’t have to be a big decision.

Sometimes healing begins with one small act of living.
