Healthy Eating Matters During Chemo

Many cancer patients are faced with chemotherapy as part of their treatment plan. Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells. It works by targeting rapidly dividing cells, which includes cancer cells, but can also affect other fast-growing healthy cells in the body, such as those in the bone marrow, digestive tract, and hair follicles.

It can also have a significant impact on gut health as it can irritate the digestive tract, cause nausea and vomiting, bring on diarrhea or constipation, change the gut microbiome and/or lead to loss of appetite.

People undergoing chemotherapy need to ensure they are getting proper nutrients and adequate hydration as they move through therapy. 

 

How to support yourself during chemotherapy

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, especially if experiencing diarrhea or vomiting. Avoid sugary drinks and drinks full of food colouring as they are not health supportive. Instead try smoothies made with berries and leafy greens, herbal teas, coconut water, natural fruit juices, bone broth or water.

Eat a balanced diet. Eat a balanced diet with adequate protein, vitamins and minerals to support the body’s healing process. Avoid highly processed foods that are nutrient depleted and full of additives and chemicals. Eat whole foods (unprocessed foods) as much as possible.

Eat small, frequent meals. Eating small, frequent meals instead of large ones to help manage nausea and improve nutrient intake. Eating some food and food that appeals to you is important for keeping your strength up and for getting nutrients into you body.

Probiotics and Prebiotics. Considering the use of probiotics and prebiotics to help maintain a healthy gut microbiota. Always get the guidance of a healthcare provider when considering medications during treatment. Other options, if you are able, are fermented foods like Greek yogurt, kefir, kombucha and sauerkraut. 

Avoid sugary foods and drinks. Sugary foods are likely highly processed and have little nutritional value. High-sugar content drinks like soda can contribute to dehydration and provide little nutritional value. Read food labels to avoid excess sugar. The American Heart Association recommendation for men is no more than 36 grams, or 9 teaspoons, of added sugar a day, while women should consume no more than 25 grams, or 6 teaspoons, of added sugar a day. Try water with frozen fruit added to it or fresh fruit for a little sweet treat.

Patients undergoing chemotherapy should work closely with their healthcare team to manage gut health and mitigate side effects as effectively as possible.

There is a lot to navigate when you are living with cancer. Learning what to eat and what not to eat to support yourself is an important part of the healing process. When you support your health and healing you can reclaim you life and take back some control to transform your life with cancer.
